Two suspected Boko Haram suicide bombers have attacked the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID), killing one security guard and leaving a soldier injured in the process.
The suicide bombers were also killed after detonating the explosive devices strapped around them.
According to TheCable, the latest attack by the dreaded Islamist sect happened in the wee hours of Saturday with the City asleep.
“A male and female suicide bomber struck at the mechanical works department of the university,” a security source said.
“One security guard was killed and a soldier injured. The injured soldier has been taken to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.”
It is understood that the bodies of the dead have been evacuated by officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and Borno State Emergency Management Agency (BOSEMA).
So far, there’s been no official statement from the security agencies regarding the blast which occurs exactly one week after 82 Chibok schoolgirls were swapped with some of Boko Haram’s top commanders.
It also comes as a rude awakening to the new Theatre Commander, Operation LAFIYA DOLE, Maj Gen I Attahiru who replaced Maj Gen Leo Irabor earlier this week in a massive shakeup in the army.
This comes amid renewed concerns in the restive northeast region as Boko Haram insurgents have increasingly carried out attacks on military formations and civilian targets.
