After almost two hours of play, world No. 1 Witek was able to eke out a 6-3, 7-6 (4) triumph against the eighth seed to secure a match against Sabalenka. Overall, towards the conclusion of the match, Witek had 22 wins to Pegula’s 14.

She made history by being the first African woman to reach the U.S. Open semifinals during the Open era. The Tunisian is making her second career major semifinal after becoming runner-up at Wimbledon this year. The women’s singles semifinals will take place Thursday evening at Arthur Ashe Stadium, with Garcia and Jabeur opening things off at 7 p.m. ET and Witek and Sabalenka following.
