Storylines to Watch
Storylines we’ve advanced to the semifinals of the women’s singles competition at the US Open, which celebrated its tenth anniversary on Wednesday with the women’s and men’s quarterfinals. Aryna Sabalenka beat Karolina Plková 6-1, 7-6 (4) on Wednesday afternoon at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flushing, New York, to progress to the women’s semifinals at OKBet US Open Tennis.
It was a huge win for Storylines of Sabalenka, who didn’t appear like she’d make it out of the second round of the event after losing 2-6, 1-5 to Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi. The No. 6 seed, though, rebounded to overcome Kanepi 2-6, 7-6, 6-4. Sabalenka also had to come from behind in the round of 16 to upset American Danielle Collins.
Sabalenka, a two-time Grand Slam semifinalist, has not had an easy road (2021OKBet US Open and 2021 Wimbledon). But the Belarussian is demonstrating that perseverance is more important than perfection.
The 24-year-old has been steadily rising in the global rankings, reaching No. 2 last year. The world is now waiting to see whether it’s finally time for her to win her maiden Grand Slam singles championship.
In the evening, Poland’s Iga Witek faced up against American Jessica Pegula, who was the US’ last chance of progressing at this year’s US Open after Caroline Garcia beat Coco Gauff in the quarterfinals at OKBet Tennis 2022.
After almost two hours of play, world No. 1 Witek was able to eke out a 6-3, 7-6 (4) triumph against the eighth seed to secure a match against Sabalenka. Overall, towards the conclusion of the match, Witek had 22 wins to Pegula’s 14.
As ESPN Stats & Info pointed out, witek’s victory has elevated her to the elite ranks of the US Open air:
Each will seek to reach their first U.S. Open final on Thursday. Witek leads their four career matchups 3-1. Garcia, who is seeded 17th, will play No. 5 seed Ons Jabeur. Garcia has won 30 of 34 matches since earning her eighth career championship at the Bad Homburg Open, and she has recently added victories at the Poland Open and the Western & Southern Open. This year’s event has yet to see the 28-year-old Frenchman lose a set.
Jabeur advanced to the semifinals after defeating Ajla Tomljanovic, who ruined Serena Williams’ run at the US Open this year. She made history by being the first African woman to reach the U.S. Open semifinals during the Open era. The Tunisian is making her second career major semifinal after becoming runner-up at Wimbledon this year. The women’s singles semifinals will take place Thursday evening at Arthur Ashe Stadium, with Garcia and Jabeur opening things off at 7 p.m. ET and Witek and Sabalenka following.
Results of the 2022 U.S. Open women’s singles draw
Iga Swiatek won her third Grand Slam singles championship by defeating Ons Jabeur in the US Open women’s singles final, a contest between the world’s two greatest players in 2022. Swiatek, the dominating world No. 1, is the first woman in the Open Era (since 1968) to have won her first three major finals in straight sets. She is the youngest player to win three majors since Maria Sharapova won her third in 2008 at OKBet Tennis 2022.
Swiatek of Poland added her maiden US Open championship to her two French Open victories in 2020 and 2022. She was the only major champion to make it to the quarterfinals. Jabeur of Tunisia was attempting to become the first African woman to win a Grand Slam singles championship in the Open Era, two months after finishing second at Wimbledon. Serena Williams, the Open Era’s record 23-time major singles winner, dominated the first week of the OKBet U.S. Open 2022 after declaring her intention to retire from tennis. She won her first two matches in what is likely to be her last event, including a victory over No. 2 seed Anett Kontaveit, before losing to Ajla Tomljanovic.
Coco Gauff, the runner-up in the French Open and the youngest player in the top 100 at 18, was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia.
